Panel Discussion C - BE CREATIVE! BE FREE! BE … AN ARTIST!
The Artist as a Role Model in Neo-Liberal Societies

May 17 from 10.30 am to 12.30 am
Stara mestna elektrarna – Elektro Ljubljana

The sociological features and living patterns related to the artist as a worker and subject in neo-liberal societies are gradually being seen in more and more jobs and professions. Functionalistic economic and sociological theories are treating creativity, commitment, flexibility, and nomadism as essential features of the contemporary labour force, and taking the artist as a role model that already possesses these features. The artist is also considered to be a good consumer. However, is the vulnerable status of the artist-like position valued in the neo-liberal society? Are artists the ultimate models for workers in precarious social and economic conditions? How do artists relate to this issue?
